What Antidepressant Worked best For You?

And what was the worst (if you have time)?

Best: Wellbutrin (bupropion), Effexor (venlafaxine), Celexa (citalopram) is what I’m on currently and it works really well for me, the first two caused problems with Tourette’s thus the switch

Worst: Remeron (mirtazapine) - it made me hungry and sleepy all the time but was otherwise okay, all the antipsychotics I tried for Tourette’s were awful (Seroquel, Zyprexa, Orap, a few others)

Ineffectual: the other SSRIs I tried (Paxil, Zoloft, Prozac.. the Prozac just made me extremely irritable)

Prozac did wonders for me but if you want to get well properly you need to have counselling at the same time to get to the root of what is making you depressed. Good luck

All I can say is that I tried Prozac (fluoxetine) and it seemed to work a little but I also had problems falling asleep and staying asleep. It seemed to make me restless too. I have not been diagnosed with depression though so I just have mild symptoms. It might be different for a person that has a more severe case of depression.

I just started Lexapro… so far it’s ok, I don’t feel as bad - but not as good as I hoped. But it’s only been a week and a half and from what I hear - you have to give it atleast 2 weeks for any anti-depressant to take full affect

Wellbutrin and Zoloft (Sertraline). Trazadone worked. But got plugged up nose in the morning.

    Venlafaxine (Effexor) did not help.

    Husband has Depression.

I’m still going through the process of finding one that works for me.

So far Trazodone is the one that is the best just because it helps me sleep. It’s what I am on now but have it with other meds as well currently mirtazapine but that will change soon.

Worst- Prozac - made me iller.

I’ve also tried ( any havent worked) mirtazapine, sertraline, citalopram, Venlafaxine.

Luvox. Gosh, it saved me from the little personal torturer that lives in my head…aka intrusive-thought OCD that had taken over my life.
They gave me Fluphenazine, which is an antipsychotic, for my Tourette’s,
and it gave me an acute dystonic reaction, I thought I was gonna die, it hurt really bad and I had to spend the day in the ER with an IV in my arm pumping me full of the antidote. But after that I realized needles could be useful so I don’t mind getting stuck any more.

Stay off the pills, they only mask symptoms they don’t cure anything. They also have side effects that are far more damaging over time. Depression is the physical manifestation of emotional disturbance. The only things that will truly help are therapy ( although long talks about what’s on your mind with a good friend can be just as effective and rarely cost you more than a cup of coffee or a glass of wine.) or actually taking some initiative to change whatever in your life is the root of your problem.
Be honest with yourself about why you are having these feelings then stop whining about it, stop expecting an easy fix or some magic pill to make you better and invest yourself into making the changes you need to make. I didn’t say it would be easy but it will be rewarding. if you MUST take a pill be wary of prozac and other "mood stabilizers" they numb to the good feelings as well as the bad ones.
EXERCISE, even if it is only a ten minute walk a day, is really the healthiest best action you can take. It releases the same endorphins and seratonin that the pills do but it quantities that your body is able to replicate naturally. it will make you just as happy without making you dependent. The problem with mood stabilizers and anti-depressants is they create such an overflow of hormones that the neurons in your brain go into overdrive and develop a tolerance, which is why you have to keep increasing your dose, eventually when you go off the pills you feel even worse because your body can not naturally produce the amount of happy hormones the pills have been triggering and you become dependent on them to feel good.
It takes 2-3 weeks to see any results from medication anyway so why don’t you try exercising for 30 mintues a day and either writing your thoughts out in a journal or talking to a friend for 30 mintues a day every day for 2-3 weeks and see if you don’t already feel better on your own. If you don’t then try a drug, I’ve heard good things about Effexor (sp?). Feel Happy, there is nothing so bad that you can’t change it if you try. But you have to TRY.

I take generic Wellbutrin SR (150 mg) in the morning, and Lexapro (10 mg) with dinner, for depression and anxiety. I’ve been taking that for over two years, and it’s working very well for me.

The Wellbutrin SR seems to help me to be more alert and active - and wanting to do things - while the Lexapro makes me more mellow, and it helps me sleep better, too. They are relatively low doses of each medication, which keeps side effects at a minimum. I really can’t tell I’m taking any medication at all.

Anti-depressants effect everyone differently so its almost useless comparing them as what works for one person will do nothing for someone else.

I started on Prozac about 8 months ago, although I suspected it was still leaving me too low I was nervous about coming off it as another drug might have been even worse. Then towards the end of last year I was put on Mirtazapine, another anti-depressant to take *on top* of Prozac. My mood is SO much more balanced. I used to experience severe dips in mood most days but now I hardly ever do. Apparently Mirtazapine often boosts the effects of other anti-depressants as well as working in it’s own right.

I am taking mertazapine. It seems to have a positive effect on my mood. Although I still have bad days. It also helps me to get to sleep at night.

I have heard that it does increase peoples appetites but is hasn’t done with me.

I have a friend who takes St John’s Worts and she swears by them. These are herbal and available at the supermarket.

Good luck in finding one that works for you.

Right now I’m taking St Johns Wort (herbal) and it helps a bit but the worse (and only) other anti-depressant I took was Paxil (Seroxat). It made me do things like self-harm. And it made me feel emotionally numb. I decided to come off them after six months of taking them. I’m going to see a doctor soon. I still don’t like the idea of taking medication after my past experience but I’ll see what they say before I come to any conclusion.

Everyone’s brain chemistry is as unique as our looks and personalities. However, a new study was done showing that Lexapro and Zoloft are two of the best. Personally, I like Lexapor because it also helps with anxiety and is one of the few antidepressants that doesn’t pack weight on you — it even helps some people to better control their appetites and lose weight. The best-Venlafaxine (only if the dose is upwards of 250mg daily, as below this level, it works as a SRRI and at a higher dose, the norepinephrine is able to work). Venlefaxine SR (the modified release capsules) caused me lots of bad side effects, though.
SSRI`s (prozac, seroxat, etc) have all been useless for me, and I`d have been aswell to have swallowed a tic tac, daily.
