Which Antidepressant worked BEST for you?

My current medication is pooping out on me, and I’m on the maximum allowed amount of mg. What’s worked for you? and what were the side effects like for that specific medication?

Wellbutrin is the only drug I respond to at all. And it has not given me strange side effects. I feel the worst of it is that it sort of dehydrates your whole body, making you more prone to headaches. But I learned to keep lots of water and crystal light around and if I’m drinking up, no problems. Chap stick is a favorite now, too. And if you like a cocktail now and again, keep it to 2 with food, because any more and the hangover would be unlike any hangover you could ever fathom.
From what I understand, it’s popular to add to other meds for a combo thing that helps a lot of people.

Worst: Effexor. Even the sight of the little Effexor post it pads and junk at my doc’s office freaks me out. Unless you are REALLY depressed, it’s just way to much medicine, IMHO. Even on the smallest dose I felt like my head would explode.

Close runner up: Lexapro. I was very, very tired. But that is used to treat depression with anxiety, and I don’t have the anxiety so maybe that was my problem.

Good luck finding the right one.

Zoloft worked best but I had sexual side effects… numbing / desensitization. My doctor added a small dose of wellbutrin with the Zoloft and it helped.

This was years ago and I know there are a bunch of new antidepressants now.

    Xanax or Zoloft works fine.

I found that a combo worked best for me… zoloft in the morning, geodon in the afternoon/evening, trazadone at night. watch out, b/c the geodon and the trazadone will both make you tired. I also take oxazapam (sp?) for panic attacks, when necessary.

Parnate! It is an MAO Inhibitor. I believe this class of drug is not prescribed real often now, since the newer drugs (SSRIs for example) have come out, but my psychiatrist and I have found that Parnate is *the one* that works for me. There are possible interactions with other drugs and certain foods; I have never had a problem with this at all. The only side effect I have experienced (a good one!) is that it brought my high blood pressure down to normal, so that I was able to get off my high blood pressure medication.

I highly recommend you ask your doctor about Parnate, especially if other anti-depressants are not working well for you.

    I wish you the best.
