Best thing to take is something natural that won't cause any other problems like pushing your cortisol up.

I know that licorace is good to balance that and the bottom line is that your adrenals are creating a problem. A nutritionist that can test you can give you support.

However, you can take Omega 3 fish oil for depression. It is an essential fatty acid.

And for anxiety, you can take tart cherry capsules. You can find that in the health food store or on line, but you need to make sure it is "flash pasteurized" or the goodness will be cooked out of it.
You can take a capsule or even two every four hours for anxiety if needed. It is a food product.
References :
Rhodiola is great. as is L-Theanine and 5-htp. Kava is more for anxiety but can be hard on the liver. I use a blend of herbs called panicyl. Works well for me. I have anxiety but not depression. Good luck!
References :
personal experience

Here are some best natural antidepressant/anxiety
1. Passiion flower is highly recommended as a herbal remedy due to it’s calming down / anxiety effect. It can help to reduce one’s blood pressure as well.

2. Saint Johns wort might help. This herb has been famous for it’s ability to relive depression and even clean wounds on the body.

3. valerian shrub. This root herb acts as a kind of ’sleeping pill’ which can help the patient sleep soundly.

4. 5-HTP - 5-HTP is also known as hydroxytryptophan and it is widely known as one of the most effective natural anxiety remedy options out there. It is used to treat insomnia and migraines on top of treating anxiety, and one of the best parts is that the side effects are known to be very minimal.

5 .Lavender is often used as well for calming purposes. It is very effective in treating people who have anxiety attacks.

6. Lemon balm, another help that not only calms the nerves, but also aids digestion and lower blood pressure.

7. Kava is herb which can bring one’s stress and anxious levels down to a minimum. This herb comes from the roots. If you have problems sleeping, then try out hop. This herb tastes and smells bitter, but it has an effect of relaxing your body.
References :
http://chicnhealth.com/herbal-remedies-to-calm-you-down/

I just started taking rhodiola on the advice of a naturopath. I haven't really noticed a difference, although my cravings for sweets seem a little bit less intense.

I used to use kava kava before exams. I felt that it helped.

One of the best things for depression is exercise. However, I just learned that sustained aerobic activity is not a good idea and actually weakens the heart in the long run. I ordered an ebook from Dr. Al Sears about his PACE Program and it really changed my mind about exercise. He also recommends many supplements and dietary changes, and I've written several times to his office and they have responded each time.

I would avoid all anti-depressants/anti-anxiety meds like the plague, particularly SSRIs. I have seen so many women act incredibly irrationally when going off of them. I think it's dangerous to mess around with your brain chemistry, and I don't believe that you can selectively alter just one neurochemical.

I just found out that I have a chronic deficiency in B12 and so had a shot last Friday, but again, I haven't noticed a difference yet.

I would recommend going to see a naturopath though and checking out Dr. Sears' site. I really hope you are able to find what you need.
References :
Try the Rhodiola. Kava can reduce anxiety but won't affect high cortisol levels whereas the Rhodiola may help.
Also, you should avoid Kava if you are taking med. Possible drug interactions.

You should do some research on adaptogenic herbs.
